Anton Adasinsky is a unique figure in the world of contemporary theatre. Starting with joint projects with Polunin, Shemyakin, and Kuryokhin, he not only came to the idea of his own theatre, the famous DEREVO, but also expanded the very concept of “theatre.”
Photography, music, dance, cinema, theatre, prose — it seems there are no forms of creative expression that he isn’t interested in. But why was it precisely the 1990s and the 2000s that gave rise to such a creative explosion in the country? Why are producers, rather than creators, now at the helm of projects, and what is Adasinsky ready to surprise us with tomorrow?

Back in the pre‑quarantine times, we planned a special broadcast about Alexander Sokurov’s film “Faust”. We managed to collect unique materials from the set, from the premiere in Venice, and record an interview with the lead actor, Anton Adasinsky. But the new rules stopped the project in its tracks.
It’s unclear when all this will be over, so now we’re publishing at least the interview—in full. Reimagining the image of Mephistopheles, the painful search for acting techniques, the peculiarities of working with a taciturn director, a foreign language, and on top of everything else… What exactly is devilry? Does it imply beauty or ugliness? And, in the end, who is closer to a person: the devil or God?

“Wet, happy”: Anton Adasinsky performed a confession on the border between pantomime and stand‑up comedy under a pouring rain in Arkhangelsk.
Towards the end of the third day of the XXVI Street Theatre Festival, a pure improvisation took place in the museum courtyard on Pomorskaya Street. Never before had the creator of the Derevo theatre been so close to the Arkhangelsk audience.
